What is the Elo rating?

The Elo rating system is a method for calculating the relative skill levels of players in chess and other competitive games. Named after its creator, Arpad Elo, a Hungarian-American physics professor, this system assigns a numerical rating to each player. A higher rating indicates a stronger player. When two players compete, the expected outcome is calculated based on their ratings, and ratings are adjusted after each game. A beginner might start around 800-1000, club players typically range from 1200-1800, while grandmasters usually have ratings above 2500.

How is your level computed?

Your level is calculated by comparing your Elo rating against the statistical distribution of players matching your selected criteria (age, gender, country, and rating type). We use FIDE rating data to model realistic distributions for different player groups. The result shows what percentage of comparable players have a lower rating than you. For example, if your level shows 75%, you're rated higher than 75% of players in your comparison group.
